HERMOSILLO, SONORA, MEXICO - The Yaqui Tribe is not satisfied with the arrest of Francisco Hiram alias “El Morocho”, 26 years old, arrested by ministerial agents of the Attorney General's Office in Sonora (FGJE) for the alleged murder of the leader of the ethnic group, Tomás Rojo Valencia.

Mario Luna Romero, spokesman and defender of the Yaqui tribe, pointed out that in addition to knowing the material author, they also seek to find the intellectual actors, to find the real motive for the murder.

"We are not satisfied with the results of the Prosecutor's Office, as they captured an alleged perpetrator, but we still have to know who the intellectual authors were and the motive for the murder," he said for the Express Newsletter 24/7, hosted by Cynthia García Amavizca .

"It is very simplistic to relate this case to the issue of the blockade of the International Highway, particularly because since 2016 we have denounced this operation when strangers began to block the road to ask for money."

This, after Claudia Indira Contreras, prosecutor of Sonora, affirmed that according to investigations, the motive for the homicide was orchestrated by organized crime groups involved in the blockade that the ethnic group maintains on the Federal Highway Mexico 15 that crosses their lands.

At one point, Tomás Rojo promoted a collection booth at the blockade that would provide order and that the proceeds would benefit the Yaqui community.

Low profile

However, Luna Romero, mentioned that the indigenous leader had been focused on other projects for a long time, and that he kept a low profile on this issue, and so the Yaqui authorities will demand that the case be thoroughly investigated and that they will not just accept the current official version of the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.

In addition, they will demand public reporting of the investigation files that exist on 20 young people, between men and women, who have disappeared in the Yaqui territory, and the mysterious death of people with certain leadership in different indigenous locations.

“We have already promoted dialogue tables with the authorities to live in an environment of peace for our children, it is not our job to investigate, or confront people who have weapons that are even more powerful than the police corporations, for that reason we make use of the legal and juridical tools”, he concluded.
