Maya Traditional Authorities dismiss leader for giving AMLO "Staff of Authority"

CANCÚN, Quintana Roo - Last December 1, José Isabel Sulub Cimá, in his capacity as general of the Ceremonial Center of the Speaking Cross of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and president of the Great Mayan Council, participated in the ceremony in which native peoples from the country presented a “staff of authority" to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at a ceremony held in the Plaza de la Constitución in Mexico City.

As a result of his participation in said event, Salub Cimá has been demoted and today is a simple "soldier".

On Friday, February 8, the impeachment process concluded, led by a group of Mayan dignitaries, including the general of Chancá, Veracruz, Gabino Cruz Yeh; judge Edilberto Chablé Catzín and Cornelio Puc Jiménez.

The main cause of his demotion is having attended, without the consent of the traditional Maya authorities, to the delivery of the "staff of authority" to López Obrador after taking his oath of office as president before the Chamber of Deputies.

The general director of the Institute for the Development of the Mayan People and the Indigenous Communities (Inmaya), Delta Moo Arriaga, confirmed the dismissal of José Isabel Sulub and the appointment of Cornelio Puc Jiménez as general of the Ceremonial Center of the Speaking Cross of Felipe Carrillo Puerto .

Although she assured that the state government stays out of this conflict, the official indicated that a group of dignitaries went to officially present Cornelio Puc Jiménez to the Secretary of Government, Francisco López Mena, as the new maximum authority of the Ceremonial Center which is the head of the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

"They made the change of Don Isabel. They have already presenting it to the state government. I was present, "said Moo Arriaga.

The head of Inmaya said that Mayan dignitaries are autonomous and have their own rules.

Meanwhile, yesterday in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, dignitaries announced that José Isabel Sulub "is simply a soldier" and that "he no longer holds any office".

The Mayan dignitaries of the Speaking Cross of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the Great Mayan Council with their ceremonial centers are inheritance of the War of the Castes that began in 1847 and ended in 1901 with the taking of what today is Felipe Carrillo Puerto, which was founded by the Mayan rebels in 1850 with the name of Noj Kaj Santa Cruz Balam Naj Kampokolche in accord with instructions from the Speaking Cross of Quitana Roo.

Although there were some later uprisings, the last of them occurred on April 13, 1933 in Dzulá, in the municipality of Felipe Puerto, which was headed by Lieutenant Evaristo Sulub, grandfather of José Isabel Sulub.

The devotees of the Speaking Cross consists of 482 dignitaries, among them generals, priests, commanders, captains, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals and prayer people that are in charge of taking care of five ceremonial centers, which are located in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tixcacal Guardia, Chancá -Veracruz, Chumpón and Tulum, as well as the traditional churches of Kantunilkín, San Martiniano, X-Yaxley, X-Yatil, X-Hazil Sur, X-Pichil, Tihosuco, Sabán, Sacalaca, Señor, Tuzik, Kampokolche 'Nuevo and Dzulá .

In addition to the appointment of Cornelio Puc as general of the Ceremonial Center of the Speaking Cross of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and president of the Grand Mayan Council, Simón Caamal Cab was appointed sergeant of the Ceremonial Center of Chumpón.

The act can only be understood from the logic of neoindigenism that accompanies and justifies the undertaking of large megaprojects in territories of Indigenous Peoples. Although it is not widely recognized, or acknowledged, for the new administration, indigenous people are the object of policies to combat poverty, not subjects of inherenenrt rights ito rights, especially that of self-determination. It is enough to verify this, to see how the INPI was set up and instituted, the Monreal initiative for agrarian development or silence on compliance with the San Andrés Accords.

Self Determination and Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the New NAFTA Trade Zone of North America [Canada-US-Mexico]

And so instead on December 1st in full view of the multitude in Mexico and witnessed by the world community AMLO rejected the recognition of Indigenous Self Determination in Mexico and openly and criminally violated the Right of Free, Prior and Informed Consent by announcing in no uncertain terms:

68. The Maya Train will be built to communicate by means of this rapid and modern transportation system the national tourists and passengers in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
For those who have yet to become aware of the Maya Train project in the Yucatán, it is a megadevelopment project that has been broadly denounced by the Maya communities of the region, national and international associations of environmental and Human Rights defenders, and very significantly a growing alliance of Original Nations of Indigenous Peoples that stretches from Mexico, across the USA and into Canada.  The Maya of the Yucatán have called the project the “Train that Tramples the Maya” and are moving towards an international boycott campaign and call to divest.
