"NO to the Mega Pig Farms"
Accompanied by a batucada (dancing drum group) and a brass band, residents of the municipality of Homún marched on Tuesday in the center of Mérida to protest against a pig farm company that has a production plant in that town.
About 300 people, most of them from Homún, gathered in the La Mejorada park, located on Calle 57 and 50 in downtown Merida.
To the rhythm of a batucada and a brass band and carrying loudspeakers, posters and Mayan flags (with the Mayan colors of the cardinal points: red, East; black, West; white, North, and yellow, South), the protesters left for the Government Palace, located at Calle 60 and 61.
"Comrades, do not fall for provocations from anyone, it is very important that you do not allow yourself to be provoked," one of the leaders urged the others.
At the head of the peaceful demonstration was Doroteo Hau Kuk, leader of the Kanan Ts’ono’ot civil association, accompanied by a woman and a girl dressed in hipil.
Upon reaching the Palace, the protesters began shouting "Rise Up with the rebel Mayans!", "The peoples united will never be defeated!" and "Homún is not for sale!", among other slogans.
Moments later they read a statement addressed to Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and in which they expressed their dissatisfaction with the intention of allowing the company to open a pig farm again.
In the same letter they recalled that the permits for the operation of said farm were granted by the state government 2012-2018 and that the state government 2018-2024 endorses them.
In addition, they abounded, they have allowed the installation of other pig farms in Celestún, Kinchil and San Fernando, Maxcanú police station, towns where on Sunday, July 25, citizen consultations were held to find out if the residents want the farms, and they assured that the answer it was negative.
“The Sustainable Development Secretariat (state SDS), headed by Sayda Rodríguez (Gómez), did not appear in Kinchil, San Fernando, or Celestún, to provide information to the residents about why the permits were issued without consulting the residents. Mayan peoples and on the effects on the environment that this type of pig factories have,” says the collective statement.
The protesters demanded from the governor a response to his demands and a position on what they call abuses and trampling on the rights of the Mayans.
They also asked the state government to indicate if it is going to respect the results of the citizen consultations and if it will continue to endorse the permits for the mega-farms.
Also, in their message, they assured that they will not stop fighting for their rights.
